The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Charles E. Wise, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Foret, France, 12 October 1918. While leading his company in an advance from the Bois-de-Pays to the Bois-de-Foret, Captain Wise was severely wounded, but continued to lead his men until he became so weak that he was unable to advance further. He then directed the advance of his company from the shelter of a shell hole until the command could be turned over to the first sergeant, all the other officers having become casualties.
