The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal Andrew Traynor, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 16 March 1864, while serving with Company D, 1st Michigan Cavalry, in action at Mason’s Hill, Virginia. Having been surprised and captured by a detachment of guerrillas, Corporal Traynor, with other prisoners, seized the arms of the guard over them, killed two of the guerrillas, and enabled all the prisoners to escape.
