The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant James Edgar Engle, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 18 May 1864, while serving with Company I, 97th Pennsylvania Infantry, in action at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia. Sergeant Engle responded to a call for volunteers to carry ammunition to the regiment on the picket line and under a heavy fire from the enemy assisted in carrying a box of ammunition to the front and remained to distribute the same.
