By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ambrose F. White, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 15 July 1918, Lieutenant White repeatedly volunteered to lead patrols against the advancing Germans and in each instance successfully accomplished his mission, encouraging his men by his dash and fearlessness.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ambrose Franklin White, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at La Franquette Farm, France, 22 July 1918. While Lieutenant White’s unit was in close contact with the enemy, a spy circulated a report that the company had been ordered to withdraw. Those who thus retired were shot down by the enemy. During the disorder that followed, Lieutenant White fearlessly reorganized the platoon under close-range enemy fire. Due to his heroic example, the men of his platoon held their ground and repulsed the strong enemy attack which followed.
