The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Hugh Weatherman (ASN: 124281), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery C, 5th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Mandres, France, 1 March 1918. During a heavy enemy bombardment of gas and high explosive shells, Private Weatherman left shelter for the purpose of putting gas masks on his horses; and, while so doing, was mortally wounded by a shell fragment. Realizing the character of his wound, he refused medical attention, urging the medical corps men to assist other wounded men who could be saved.
