By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Mechanic Elmer A. Walton (ASN: 2339335), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company H, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy on 8 June 1918, Mechanic Walton volunteered to carry an important message over an open field generally thought to be impassible in daylight. He delivered his message in spite of having been wounded and almost buried by the explosion of a shell while en route. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

Mechanic Walton volunteered and carried a message over territory generally thought impassable during daylight. He accomplished his mission in spite of having been wounded and nearly buried by a shell explosion.
