The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class John W. Walter (ASN: 1286207), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 10 October 1918. During an advance on Rechene Hill, Private Walter, after being shot twice in the abdomen, captured a machine-gun by killing three of the enemy.
