The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant James Walsh (ASN: 63580), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Marcheville, France, 26 September 1918. Sergeant Walsh displayed remarkable coolness, courage and devotion to duty under terrific shell and machine-gun fire. When surrounded by the enemy, he organized men near him, collected the wounded and brought them to safety. He was himself wounded but remained in action until his company was relieved several hours later.
