The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Frank Joseph Vida (ASN: 1225539), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 108th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ronssoy. France, September 29 – 30, 1918. After all his company officers had been killed or wounded First Sergeant Vida took command, despite the fact that he, too, had been wounded. He succeeded in capturing part of the Hindenburg line and holding it against several strong counterattacks, remaining with his company and refusing to go to the rear for medical treatment until it was relieved.
