The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Elwood Brown Twiford (ASN: 1314770), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918. Having become separated from the remainder of his squad in a heavy fog, and, being surrounded by several enemy machine-gunners, Private Twiford set up his automatic rifle and within a few minutes killed or captured all of the enemy near him.
