The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Herbert Stacy Turrentine (ASN: 1315188), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ypres, Belgium, 31 August 1918. After his platoon sergeant and a corporal had been shot while firing an automatic rifle, Private Turrentine ran forward across an open space and picked up the gun, but was instantly killed by sniper fire while attempting to get the automatic gun back into action.
