The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James A. Turner, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Buzancy, France, November 2 – 3, 1918. After having been severely wounded during the night of 2 November 1918, First Lieutenant Turner continued in command of his company. Despite his wound, he led his company in the attack the following day, when he was killed by an enemy shell. He set an example of fearlessness and bravery to his men.
