The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Benjamin Eade Trerise (ASN: 1708988), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Binarville, France, 4 October 1918, and near St. Juvin, France, 15 October 1918. During an attack in the Argonne Forest, 4 October 1918, Sergeant Trerise was wounded in five places by shrapnel. Although in need of medical attention, he refused to be evacuated but remained steadying his men and holding his unit intact. On 15 October after two attempts at rescue of a wounded man had failed, he advanced through heavy enemy fire and brought the wounded man to shelter.
