The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Philip Tindall, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 126th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Gesnes, northwest of Verdun, France, 2 October 1918. First Lieutenant Tindall was severely wounded in the shoulder by a shell fragment at the beginning of the advance on Gesnes, but in spite of his wound he continued to lead his company throughout the advance. He helped to organize the ground against counterattack and remained on duty with his command until the nest morning, when he went to the rear only under vigorous protest. Throughout the entire engagement Lieutenant Tindall displayed the utmost coolness and devotion to duty under the heaviest fire.
