The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Nicholas L. Tamme (ASN: 1527377), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 147th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, south of Cierges, France, 29 September 1918. Volunteering to attempt the recovery of the barrel of a 37-millimeter gun abandoned the previous day when the gun crew was gassed and when his battalion had retired to a more advantageous position, Private Tamme advanced alone in broad daylight and under observation of the enemy 200 yards in advance of his own lines under intense machine-gun fire, recovered the missing part and returned in safety to his own lines. His conduct was a splendid example of devotion to duty and proved an inspiration to the men of his battalion.
