The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Major James Quinlan, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 29 June 1862, while serving with 88th New York Infantry, in action at Savage Station, Virginia. Major Quinlan led his regiment on the enemy’s battery, silenced the guns, held the position against overwhelming numbers, and covered the retreat of the 2d Army Corps.
