The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Edward B. Strom, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 126th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Cote Dame Marie, west of Romagne, France, 14 October 1918. When the troops on the left of the attacking line were held up by intense enemy machine-gun fire from Cote Dame Marie, Captain Strom volunteered to go forward with a squad of men to clean out the enemy machine-gun nests. With utter disregard for his own personal danger Captain Strom heroically advanced with about six men who were armed with rifles and hand grenades, and succeeded in either killing or capturing about twelve of the enemy and completely silencing the machine guns, which permitted the battalion to continue the advance and resulted in the saving of the lives of many of his comrades.
