The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Frank Stillwell (ASN: 125397), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery A, 6th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fleville, France, 4 October 1918. When his section of a platoon had been caught in an enemy barrage and all cannoneers of the platoon had been either killed or wounded, Sergeant Stillwell made repeated trips into the shelled area to remove the wounded. He assumed command of the platoon after the commanding officer had been evacuated and skillfully performed the duties involved therein.
