The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Clarence L. Stewart (ASN: 553370), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 7th Machine-Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Chateau-Thierry, France, 31 May to 4 June 1918. As a motorcycle rider Private Stewart worked steadily for 24 hours without rest. He was struck by shrapnel, which wounded him in the neck, back, and in both legs, but he continued on duty in spite of these injuries.
