The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal George Freeman Spinney (ASN: 60208), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Verdun, France, 27 October 1918. While advancing with the first wave Corporal Spinney, with another soldier, attacked a machine-gun nest and killed two of the crew. While attempting to capture the remainder of the crew this gallant officer was himself killed.
