The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John Daniel Spencer, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Fismes, France, 4 August 1918. While leading his company in the attack against Fismes First Lieutenant Spencer was knocked down and severely wounded by machine-gun fire. Without regard to his wounds he regained his feet and continued to lead his command until again severely wounded.
