The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Chief Warrant Officer Two George T. Johnson, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight on 9 October 1964, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date he received word that an aircraft had been shot down and the crew needed evacuation. Chief Warrant Officer Two Johnson immediately proceeded to an unarmed UH-1st Battalion helicopter, and in the company of others who volunteered for the mission, flew to the crash site. As his aircraft approached the landing zone it came under heavy enemy fire. Without regard for his personal safety, Chief Warrant Officer Two Johnson continued his approach as the Viet Cong increased their fire and successfully landed a the site. Chief Warrant Officer Johnson’s unusual alertness, calmness, and flying skill enabled the recovery of the downed crew in minimum time, thus eliminating the possibility of captured. Chief Warrant Officer Two Johnson’s courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Service of the United States.
