The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain (Infantry) Blaise J. Bergiel, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Bergiel distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action while serving with Company B, 227th Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopter) (Airmobile), 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 February 1970. When the base came under intense rocket, mortar, and enemy ground attack, Captain Bergiel skillfully maneuvered his aircraft through a hail of shrapnel to place suppressive fire on the hostile positions. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
