The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Machinist’s Mate David A. Woody, United States Navy, for heroism while serving at Patrol Squadron SIX (VP-6), Naval Air Station, Barbers Point, Hawaii. Upon spotting three children being swept to sea by a riptide at Bellows Air Force Station, Hawaii, on 7 October 1984, Petty Officer Woody with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, swam to the drowning girl and hoisted her to the surface. While carrying the panicky girl he proceeded to the remaining two children and effected the safe rescue of all three children. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Petty Officer Woody saved the children from drowning; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
