The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Airman First Class John D. Jones, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life on 29 April 1959, at Wheelus Air Base, Libya. On that date, while performing an engine run-up on an F-100, a violent explosion and fire occurred in the aft section of the aircraft. With complete knowledge of the possibility of further explosions, Airman First Class Jones unhesitatingly obtained a fire extinguisher and succeeded innkeeping the fire under control until the arrival of the Base Fire Department. The exemplary courage ad heroism displayed by Airman Jones reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
