The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Lance Corporal Laurence J. Morgan, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving with Detachment 3, Seventh Communication Battalion, THIRD Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific on 10 November 1987. At approximately 1100 hours, Lance Corporal Morgan and two other Marines observed a Republic of Korea Army truck crash into a bridge and land upside down in the river. Going to the aid of the trapped and injured Korean soldiers, the three Marines unhesitatingly entered the cold water, ignoring the fuel spilling around the vehicle. During the attempt to remove the first Korean soldier, the vehicle’s battery sparked, igniting some of the spilled fuel. Unconcerned for his own safety, Lance Corporal Morgan, after repeated attempts, forced open a door and rescued a solder. By this time, another Korean soldier had arrived with a fire extinguisher to periodically subdue the flames. Now soaked with diesel fuel and oil, Lance Corporal Morgan continued to ignore his own personal safety and succeeded in rescuing another soldier. Discovering that the deriver was still pinned beneath the truck, he extricated him. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Lance Corporal Morgan undoubtedly save the solders from further injury and possible death, thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
