The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting The Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Captain (Corps of Engineers) Torrence M. Wilson (ASN: OF-108043), United States Army, for heroism, not involving participation in aerial flight in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Wilson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 17 November 1968 while serving as Company Commander of Company C, 39th Engineer Combat Battalion, 18th Engineer Brigade. During the early morning hours f that date Company C came under a heavy mortar, rocket, and ground attack by a 200 man Viet Cong force. Captain Wilson immediately organized the defense of the company. He repeatedly exposed himself to intense fire to survey damaged sections of the perimeter, and direct close-in gunship, artillery, and mortar support. When two of the surviving Viet Cong fled, Captain Wilson organized and personally led a patrol 300 meters outside the perimeter to capture them. His courage and leadership under fire were truly exceptional, and his ability to effectively command his unit while under a large-scale attack contributed immeasurably to the defeat of the opposing force. Captain Wilson’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a numerically superior Viet Cong force was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
