The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Bobby L. Baker, United States Army, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as Pilot of an armed helicopter in Company A, 48th Aviation Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, in action on the night of 1 July 1968, when he was called upon to fly an ammunition re-supply mission to an American unit which was under heavy attack by a North Vietnamese Army company. He arrived at the contact area in the midst of intense small arms fire and found the situation extremely critical. Reconnaissance and illumination aircraft were receiving heavy anti-aircraft fire in the vicinity and the poorly-visible landing zone could only be approached with a slow, vertical descent. With his door guns pouring heavy suppressive fire into the enemy positions, Chief Warrant Officer Baker fearlessly maneuvered his aircraft into the landing zone and successfully completed the mission. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he then volunteered to remain in the embattled area in order to direct the medical evacuation helicopters into the landing zone and to guide a mechanized company of reinforcements to their positions. Due largely to the professional skill and inspirational courage of Chief Warrant Officer Baker, a determined enemy force was defeated.
