The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star with Combat “V” to Lance Corporal Michael A. Cortese, United States Marine Corps, for heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam, while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division. On 10 May 1967, during Operation UNION, Lance Corporal Cortese’s unit launched an assault against a battalion of North Vietnamese Army Regulars entrenched on Hill 110 in the Suoi Cho Duc Valley. During the ensuing fire fight, he observed a wounded Marine lying in an area exposed to intense enemy fire and, disregarding his own safety, unhesitatingly moved across the fire-swept terrain to assist the casualty. After proceeding only a short distance, an enemy round struck his helmet which knocked him to the ground. Although dazed, Lance Corporal Cortese quickly regained his feet and resolutely continued to advance until he reached his injured comrade. Alternatively delivering suppressive fire at the enemy positions and skillfully administering first aid, he made the wounded Marine as comfortable as possible and then returned to his fire team. Repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire, he effectively positioned his men and directed a heavy volume of accurate fire against the enemy. When a nearby fire team leader was mortally wounded, Lance Corporal Cortese immediately assumed command of the unit and ably directed both fire teams until he was medically evacuated. His bold initiative and resolute determination in the face of extreme personal danger were an inspiration to all who observed him and undoubtedly saved the life of a fellow Marine. Lance Corporal Cortese’s courage, inspiring leadership, and selfless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and the United States Naval Service.
