The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Peter H. McGiffert, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant McGiffert distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 26 and 27 November 1967, as Special Forces advisor to a Vietnamese platoon on combat operations in hostile territory. His unit was ambushed on 26 November by an enemy company and suffered numerous casualties. Braving withering fire, Sergeant McGiffert moved among his men, treating their wounds, deploying them in defensive positions and directing their fire on the attackers. As casualties mounted under the fiierce hostile onslaught, he led his men to a bomb crater and set up a night defensive perimeter. The next morning, the numerically superior North Vietnamese force launched a determined assault to overrun his position before air support arrived. He fought fiercely to repel the attackers, killing several enemy soldiers at the edge of the crater perimeter. The insujrgents again assaulted and showered his position with grenades. Sergeant McGiffert fearlessly picked them up and hurled them back at the enemy. He was seriously wounded when a grenade exploded before he could toss it. His fearless actions prevented the enemy from overrunning his lines. Sergeant McGiffert’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
