The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class John J. Cooke (ASN: US-52766103), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, on 1 February 1969. On this date, Specialist Fourth Class Cooke was serving as a rifleman in Company C, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force operation seven miles west of Ben Cat. As the friendly unit proceeded toward an enemy base camp, the lead element sustained numerous casualties and was pinned down by a vicious automatic weapons, small arms, and rocket-propelled grenade fusillade. The main portion of the company withdrew to initiate flanking movements and retrieve the wounded. Braving the intense barrage raking the area, Specialist Fourth Class Cooke placed suppressive covering fire which enabled several wounded personnel to be removed. During the ensuing battle, more casualties were inflicted on his unit. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he secured several light anti-tank weapons and advanced toward the insurgent positions. Ignoring the hail of hostile rounds, he fired the rockets and threw hand grenades which confused the aggressors and enabled his comrades to evacuate more injured men. His exemplary courage, outstanding professionalism, and heroic determination significantly contributed to the successful accomplishment of his company’s mission, and were instrumental in saving soldiers’ lives. Specialist Fourth Class Cooke’s unquestionable valor while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an insurgent forces is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
