Bishop, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy at Hue, South Vietnam, on 23 February 1968. Private First Class Bishop was serving as a rifleman in the 2d Platoon of Company A when his platoon assaulted strongly-held enemy bunker positions on the afternoon of 23 February 1968, during the enemy’s Tet Offensive. His company was part of a force bent on shutting off the enemy’s routes of retreat from Hue, which had been invaded during the offensive. Fighting heavy resistance, the company had pushed across the open sandy plains, paralleling Highway 1 to a point only two kilometers from Hue. When enemy fire threatened to halt the advance, Private First Class Bishop dashed through a storm of bullets toward one of the bunkers. He ran up on top of the dug-in enemy position, dropped a hand grenade, and dove for cover. Then he moved through intense enemy fire twice more to the top of the same bunker, each time firing a full magazine of ammunition. By singlehandedly taking the fortified enemy position and killing its defenders, Company A was able to continue its march to the walls of Hue. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Bishop, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
