(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Katie Lunning, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while servint as a Critical Care Nurse with the 379th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron on a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft in Kabul, Afghanistan, on 26 august 2021. During the U.S. Armed Forces’ hasty, large-scale withdrawal from Afghanistan, a suicide bomber bombed the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, killing civilians and U.S. forces and injujring many more. Captain Lunning served as part of the air transport team resxponsible for caring for patients in critical condition and transporting them to medical care in Germany. Captain Lunning’s exceptional leadership, dedication, and medical expertise were pivotal to the medical evacuation of twenty-two multinational and joint service casualties, including five ventilated patients and multiple Afghan evacuees. She performed patient triage and intake while operating under continued small arms fire as well as significant and imminent threat of attack. Her professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty under all conditions serve as an inspiration to her fellow flyers. Captain Lunning’s actions reflect the highest credit upon herself and the United States Air Force.
