The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Specialist Fourth Class Stephen M. Hanson, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Hanson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 4 July 1969, while serving with Troop H, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 198th Infantry Brigade, 23d Infantry (Americal) Division. On that date, Armored Cavalry Vehicles were crossing a stream in the vicinity of Binh Son when the second vehicle in the convoy detonated a mine which caused it to overturn and begin burning. The crewmen aboard the vehicle were thrown clear and in danger of further injury from exploding ammunition. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Specialist Fourth Class Hanson rushed to the scene of the explosion and carried two injured comrades to a secure area. Moments later the vehicle exploded with sufficient force to have killed anyone in the immediate area. Through his timely and courageous actions, Specialist Fourth Class Hanson was responsible for saving the lives of two of his comrades. Specialist Fourth Class Hanson’s personal heroism, concern for his fellow soldiers, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
