(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Howard R. Shaw, United States Army, for gallantry in the line of his profession as Executive Officer of the Cargo Ship U.S.S. ALCHIBA (AK-23), during operations in the Solomon Islands during the period 28 November 1942 through 1 December 1942. On 28 November 1942, the U.S.S. ALCHIBA, while delivering critical supplies to U.S. Marines at Guadalcanal, when it came under attack by a Japanese mini-submarine that struck her with two torpedoes. For more than three days Lieutenant Commander Shaw worked incessantly without proper food or rest, exposing himself to the hazars of exploding gas and ammunition, to direct firefighting efforts, as well as to unload the ship’s cargo and ferry it to shore. Lieutenant Commander Shaw’s inspiring leadership and the valiant devotion to duty of his command contributed in large measure to the outstanding success of these vital missions and reflect great credit upon the United States Naval Service.
