The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Ensign Stanley Bessmer, United States Army, for heroism in assisting in the rescue of an officer and two enlisted men from drowning on 19 November 1944, during beaching maneuvers after the three had been swept clear of the ship by a heavy surf. With utter disregard to his own personal safety, Ensign Bessmer plunged into the water and assisted in bringing the men to safety. Through his courageous effort, he contributed materially to the waving of the officer and two men from drowning. His heroic conduct, performed in the face of great danger to himself, was outstanding.
