The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 9 July 1918, (amended by act of 25 July 1963) has awarded the Distinguished Service Cross to: Corporal Ramiro Frolian Olivo for extraordinary heroism while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States on 9 May 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as an Automatic Rifleman with Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry. While on a patrol Corporal Olivo’s company came under direct attack by North Vietnamese forces. As the enemy drew to within 20 meters of his position, Corporal Olivo positioned himself and began to deliver devastating fire from his machine gun. During this exchange he provided ammunition to his comrades and suffered a gunshot wound. After the unit repulsed the initial assault, the enemy launched another attack, during which Corporal Olivo continued to provide effective and accurate fire. Throughout the second assault, he suffered additional wounds from enemy grenades but he refused medical attention or evacuation. Having expended all of his machine gun ammunition, Corporal Olivo continued to engage the enemy with his sidearm until he ultimately succumbed to his wounds. Corporal Olivo’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Cavalry Division, and the United States Army.
