The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant First Class John G. Macejunas, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action against a hostile force on 3 and 4 October 1993, during Operation UNOSOM II in Mogadishu, Somalia. Sergeant First Class Macejunas participated in a three-vehicle element assigned the mission of returning critically-injured WIA from the objective to the base. The convoy received intense fire from automatic weapons and RPGÕs, and several friendly casualties were taken. Throughout this engagement, Sergeant First Class Macejunas provided suppressive fires that allowed the convoy to keep moving while continuously moving to exposed positions. He returned with another convoy attempting to link up with the forces providing security at a downed helicopter. Sergeant First Class Macejunas again demonstrated total disregard for his own safety as he calmly engaged the enemy from the lead vehicle under heavy small arms and RPG fire during this action. Sergeant First Class Macejunas then volunteered to fly on a re-supply mission to the crash site. His helicopter received heavy fire and friendly casualties as Sergeant First Class Macejunas, dropped off the re-supply packages and then tended to the wounded on board the aircraft. He then led a force in search of a second crash site, of which was in enemy-held urban terrain and under small arms and RPG fire. Sergeant First Class MacejunasÕ leadership, professionalism, personal bravery, and complete disregard for his own life to save fellow comrades reflect the highest credit upon himself, his command, and the United States Army.
