The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant First Class Robert L. Mabryq, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action against a hostile force on 3 and 4 October 1993, during Operation UNOSOM II in Mogadishu, Somalia. Sergeant First Class Mabry and his Combat Search and Rescue Team were inserted by fast rope amidst intense small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire to respond to a downed MH-60 aircraft. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant First Class Mabry climbed the downed aircraftÕs nose and entered it from the top. Once inside, despite the high volume of enemy fire impacting the wreckage from multiple directions, Sergeant First Class Mabry and another team member labored tirelessly to extricate an unconscious crewmember. A short while later, Sergeant First Class Mabry again braved a barrage of automatic weapons fire to treat and move a Soldier with a life threatening gunshot wound to the leg. For the next fifteen hours, Sergeant First Class Mabry was the medic responsible for sustaining the lives of eleven casualties until their evacuation. Sergeant First Class MabryÕs numerous acts of courage and decisive medical interventions were directly responsible for the preservation of the lives and limbs of several Soldiers and Airmen. Sergeant First Class MabryÕs leadership, professionalism, personal bravery and complete disregard for his own life to save fellow comrades reflects the highest credit upon himself, his command, and the United States Army.
