John Ryan graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, Class of 1967. As an aviator he commanded Patrol Squadron 11, Patrol Squadron 31, and Patrol Wing 10, before being selected for Flag Rank. From 1998 to 2002 he served as the 56th Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, and then retired as a U.S. Navy Vice Admiral. In retirement he became President of the State University of New York Maritime College, and then in 2005 was named Chancellor of the State University of New York System until 2007.
