The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant ]then Technician Fourth Grade] Kirby J. Duncan (ASN: 39241263), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in the Philippine Islands, on 6 July 1945. A member of Staff Sergeant Duncan’s artillery battery was engaged in sanitary measures in the unit’s area near Tuguegarao, using gasoline to burn weeds and trans, when for some unknown reason the area around the soldier suddenly burst into flames, which completely enveloped his body. The stricken soldier started to run with his clothes blazing. Staff Sergeant Duncan, who was passing by, immediately seized him and threw him to the ground, beating out the flames with his hands. The injured soldier was no longer breathing, but Staff Sergeant Duncan administered artificial respiration, revived him, and then rushed him to the aid station. Staff Sergeant Duncan suffered severe burns on his hands and arms, but his courageous action saved his comrade’s life. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Staff Sergeant Duncan reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
