The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Louis Zimmerman (ASN: 33142236), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in the Philippine Islands on 7 April 1945. A group of soldiers wee swimming in the ocean near San Fernando when one of them, an inexperienced swimmer, was swept 175 yards from shore by the strong undertow. Hearing the cries of the drowning man, Staff Sergeant Zimmerman immediately swam to the rescue. After a 15-minutes struggle he managed to bring the exhausted soldier to shore where he administered artificial respiration. Staff Sergeant Zimmerman’s calmness and resourcefulness in a dangerous situation saved the life of his comrade. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Staff Sergeant Zimmerman reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
