The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fourth Grade Harvie Hobbs (ASN: 38119943), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 117th Engineer Combat Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in the Philippine Islands, on 20 June 1945. Technician Fourth Grade Hobbs was swimming in the Cagayan River when a comrade, who was an inexperienced swimmer, was caught int h e swift current and swept downstream. The strong undertow pulled him under and he had submerged two times when Technician Fourth Grade Hobbs managed to grab the drowning man and tow him to a position of safety. Technician Fourth Grade Hobbs’ cool, calm judgement, and courageous action, saved the life of a fellow soldier. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Technician Fourth Grade Hobbs reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
