The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fourth Grade Robert H. Spangler (ASN: 33514065), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in the Philippine Islands, on 12 July 1945. When a soldier was suddenly swept downstream by the swift current of the Paret River, Technician Fourth Grade Spangler immediately went to the rescue. Although the drowning man had gone down twice and was very heavy, Technician Fourth Grade Spangler managed to push him into shore. His courageous action saved his comrade’s life. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Technician Fourth Grade Spangler reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
