Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 348 (October 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Robert W. Holmes (ASN: 34442152), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 37th Infantry Division in the Philippine Islands, on 3 July 1945. Corporal Holmes was bathing in the Lalose River near Lal-lo when a fellow soldier who was unable to swim stepped off a drop-off into 14 feet of water. Noticing his difficulty, Corporal Holmes immediately went to the rescue. The drowning man had already gone down twice by the time Corporal Holmes reached him. However, after a hard struggle, Corporal Holmes managed to hold his comrade’s head above water and succeeded in dragging him safely to shore. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Corporal reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
