The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Abraham Belin (ASN: 39862175), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in the Philippine Islands, on 8 august 1945. Private First Class Abraham Belin and Private First Class Myron Ettested, members of an infantry patrol, were slowly and carefully working their way across the swiftly flowing Pinacanauan River when another member of the patrol lost his footing on the slippery and extremely treacherous rocky river bottom and began to stumble and stagger downstream toward the rapids and protruding boulders. Disregarding their personal safety, they moved rapidly through the dangerous current to their comrade, who was desperately but unsuccessfully trying to regain his footing and prevent himself from being forced among the rapids and boulders. The two men managed to reach the stricken soldier before he went int o the rapids, and by taking positions on both sides of their comrade, and linking his arms with theirs, they were able to get him safely ashore. The rescued soldier was suffering slightly from shock when he reached safety, but he soon regained composure and was able to continue the mission. The courage and calmness of Private First Class Belin and Private First Class Ettested save their comrade from serious injury and possible death. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Private First Class Belin reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
