The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to First Lieutenant (Medical Corps) Simon P. Yotive (ASN: 0-1794260), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services while serving with the 112th Medical Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, on New Georgia from 24 July to 5 August 1943. As an ambulance section commander in a medical battalion, he displayed great personal courage and skill in leading his men directly into the front lines to expedite the removal of casualties from dangerous areas. He frequently remained overnight with front-line troops in order to speed the evacuation of wounded men early the following day. In so doing, he was wounded, but refused to be evacuated. First Lieutenant Yotive’s constant personal supervision while working under heavy fire and in difficult terrain resulted in an efficient, smoothly operating evacuation program which saved the lives of many and sustained the morale of fighting troops. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of First Lieutenant Yotive and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
