The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Major (Infantry) Carl H. Coleman (ASN: 0-357728), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services from 11 to 20 July 1943, when his exceptional tactical judgement and spirited leadership helped to restore the confidence and fighting efficiency of a regiment during a crucial battle on New Georgia. Assuming the duties of acting S-3 when the regiment was placed under a new commanding officer in the midst of bitter combat, Major Coleman quickly grasped the tactical demands and was instrumental in issuing field orders which within a few hours reorganizing the units for offensive action with a completely renewed spirit. The nerve-wracking strain of ferocious Japanese defensive tactics and the harassing trickery of infiltrating enemy forces was offset by his reassuring calmness, mental alertness and bravery. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Major Coleman and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
