Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 524 (1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Jules C. Brazil (ASN: 0-383004), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services while serving with the 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, near Bairoko Harbor, New Georgia, from 17 August to 1 September 1943, when his expert handling of complex supply problems contributed much to the successfully coordinated activities of the Army, Navy, and Marine personnel. As supply officer for a half-dozen Army and Marine battalions, he frequently exposed himself to infiltrating enemy snipers to personally supervise distribution at the front and familiarize himself with changing supply needs. Although his day and night activities were hampered by heavy rains and intermittent bombings, he supervised the unloading of supply ships, kept his units amply equipped for extensive combat and well-fed with two hot meals daily. First Lieutenant Brazil initiated the difficult task of re-equipping troops when operations were completed. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of First Lieutenant Brazil and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
