The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Lieutenant Colonel (Chaplain’s Corps) Frederick Kirker (ASN: 0-327792), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services while serving as a Chaplain in the 37th Infantry Division, at Laiana Beach, New Georgia, from 24 July to 8 August 1943. Coming to the crowded, congested beachhead where the reception and assembly of the casualties from two divisions was an overwhelming problem, Lieutenant Colonel Kirker quickly overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to organize an orderly disposal of the dead. In ill health, he worked energetically for long hours to identify the dead, bury them with appropriate services, and mark their graves. In addition, he was of great solace to the sick and wounded. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Lieutenant Colonel Kirker and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
